How to Use the NJ Child Support Calculator

Our New Jersey Child Support Calculator helps parents estimate potential child support payments based on their income, parenting arrangements, and certain child-related expenses. The calculator offers two options: Sole Parenting and Shared Parenting.

To get started, select the parenting arrangement that best reflects your circumstances and complete the corresponding fields.

Step 1: Select Sole Parenting or Shared Parenting

Choose Sole Parenting if you want to calculate an estimate using the Custodial Parent and Non-Custodial Parent information fields.

Choose Shared Parenting if your arrangement involves a Parent of Primary Residence (PPR) and a Parent of Alternate Residence (PAR). This option also requires the number of annual overnight stays with the PAR. The calculator’s Shared Parenting form requires at least 104 overnights.

Step 2: Enter Both Parents’ Financial Information

For each parent, provide:

• Gross Weekly Income: Enter the parent’s total weekly income before taxes and deductions.
• Estimated Tax Rate (%): Enter the estimated tax percentage applicable to the parent’s income. The calculator displays a default value of 20%, which should be adjusted when appropriate.
• Other Child Support Paid Weekly ($): Enter any other weekly child support payments requested by the calculator. If none apply, leave the value at zero.

Step 3: Enter Information About Your Children

Select the number of children included in your calculation. The calculator allows you to choose between one and six children.

If you selected Shared Parenting, enter the PAR’s annual overnight stays in the corresponding field.

Step 4: Include Additional Weekly Expenses

The calculator includes fields for the following child-related expenses:

• Health Insurance for Children
• Work-Related Childcare
• Educational Expenses
• Extraordinary Expenses

Enter the applicable weekly amounts for each category. If an expense does not apply, leave its value at zero.

Step 5: Calculate Your Estimated Child Support Payment

After completing the relevant fields, click Calculate Child Support to generate your estimate.

Review the result as a preliminary calculation rather than a guaranteed payment amount. The accuracy of the estimate depends on the information entered and the limitations of the calculator.

Understanding Your Child Support Estimate

The Estimated Child Support Payment displayed by our NJ Child Support Calculator provides a preliminary indication of what a child support obligation might look like based on the financial and parenting information you entered.

The estimate takes into account the inputs available in the selected calculator, including both parents’ reported income, estimated tax rates, other child support payments, the number of children, and applicable expenses. The Shared Parenting option also uses the overnight parenting information provided.

Why Your Actual Child Support Payment May Differ

The calculator is designed as an informational estimation tool and does not replace an individualized child support calculation performed under the applicable New Jersey Child Support Guidelines.

Actual court-ordered support may differ because of additional financial circumstances, adjustments, or information not fully captured by the calculator’s input fields. The results should not be treated as a court-approved amount or a guarantee of what either parent will pay or receive.
